THE NME COOL LIST 2011

So last night I jetted over to the NME webpage to see whats going down with the hipsters in good ol' London, just to see that they've squirted out another abominable list of "cool" people from the music biz.
I always wondered, how they validate the "coolness", and therefore how the whole ranking system works. My suspect is, that it is the Agent or the Record Company who pays the most to the Magazine to have their artists featured in a higher ranking order... Oh the corrupt media, what a dismal creature it is.
Anyhow have a look here to see what I am raving about:

And here an article about it in the Independent:

So if you could make your own cool list of this year, who would you put on the number one spot?
Let's hear it from ya!

JACK WHITE GOES INSANE::: WITH CLOWN POSSE

So last night I thought it was about time again to check out what all the great man and women in music are up to at the moment and not unexpected Jack White surprised me the most.
Yes, he's done it again; a  new collaboration. This time with a partner I'd never predicted in my wildest dreams = Insane Clown Posse, the weirdest Hip Hop Duo alive.

Well so far so.... strange, but it becomes even more absurd, cause  they didn't write a new song, they covered! OK, that might not be too far off, if it would've been something kinda contemporary, tho no Ladies and Gentleman, Jack White and Insane Clwon Posse decided to cover the respectable Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with his long lost and hidden masterpiece "LECK MICH IM ARSCH".
Errr.... well, masterpiece?
The title translates one to one "Lick me in the arse", but rather means "Kiss my arse". I guess when Herr Mozart wrote it (as a canon, mind you) he was quite pissed off with someone or something, or couldn't think of something genious to say and was frustrated.

Anyhow, so these 3 boys covered it and here's a snipped of how it sounds:

What does the Jack White lovers think out there? Genious or Insane? We all know its a fine line.
Which artists would you like to see collaborating and reproducing cover which song?

Ok, I am gonna end this with a more rocking cover the White Stripes did a while back.
Here they are with  "Goin back to Memphis" by Henry & June:

KIDDIE PUNK - SID & NANCY

So last night, while searching for something entertaining to watch, I stumbled across this controversial video shot in 1981 called "The live of Sid Vicious". The crew behind the film is »Die Tödliche Doris« an old school Punk band from Germany and the main characters Sid and Nancy the children of the drummer and the guitarist.
Here's what it's all about:

Well I really just think that the film was quite entertaining, artsy and deliberatly filmed with kids to get attention, especially when using the old Nazi Symbol.

What do you peeps out there think? Are you still getting enraged when seeing the old symbol flung around like that? Do you think its irresponsible to have a 2 year old kid play Sid Vicious and "murder" his girlfriend? How far is our tolerant line by now?

EMI SHALL BE SOLD BRICK BY BRICK

So last night, while I was dancing my shoes into bits to tunes from Blur, The White Stripes and The Decemberists at the Underground (Cologne), a good friend of mine sent me that link

Ok it kinda was predictable that EMI wouldn’t survive the financial crisis, showing since of it’s death since 2007 when its markets hare was only 13% and decreasing rapidly to 10,2% in 2010 (source: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), but I didn’t expect Citigroup to give up that quickly and I wouldn’t have suspected at all that they would dare to sell EMI basically in its separate fundamental parts to scrape together as little profit as the dying label could give off. There really isn’t any respect and the least love involved for music and cultural heritage in this obvious slaughtering, cause this is what it boils down to.
Even though there are 3bn Pounds involved it is apparently not attractive enough in financial terms to be rescued and therefore only passion and love for contemporary music and most of all music history could be the saving anchor for this sinking ship. EMI’s back catalogue is full of this mentioned music history with bands of the like of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Pink Floyd and of course The Beatles, just to name a few.
Therefore I think pleading to the British State Of Culture to save such an iconic label and with it half of Europeans Pop and Rock history is more than vital and of course the body shouldn’t even think twice about it
Furthermore, examined from the music business side, 3 major records labels ( Warner, Sony and Universal) would pose a new threat to the indie and DYI music scene as majors would get even more power and dominate the music market more than ever.  With EMI still on board a new upcoming band has more choice which label could work for their music career. Especially now, as nearly every small label is somehow owned by a major it is important to make sure that a diversity of labels and therefore different leading strategies are kept alive so that each and every artists gets the individualized support they need.
This means we can just hope that the European Commission won’t allow any of the other 3 majors to buy up pieces of their dying brother, making it even more impossible for any real indie label to get a food in this fast evolving hell of a music business.

What is your take on the whole situation? Do you think it doesn’t matter who ones the back catalogue as long as it doesn’t get lost? Or do you see a potential threat in merging EMI with Sony or any of the other giants? How do you predict the future of the majors and therefore as well of the independent record labels? And how long will Warners last  till it dies too as it is now the smalles of the 3 music giants?

Here is already new information on the happening, tho only in German:

IS TROPICAL in Concert

(english version at the very bottom!)

Is Tropical

Last night, Monday evening, The Lexington in Islington, 9:00 pm:

There’s a small crowd of anticipated indie-electro kids crammed together at the front of the stage, even after the opener “Young Empire” has vanished off stage. They want to make sure they are able soak up every vibrant beat from the London trio “Is Tropical”.
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait too long, though one can’t see much anyway.
Typically for their shows, Is Tropicals stage lighting is kept rather dim, the darkness is only broken by staccato flash lights to accentuate their songs, leaving the band as only silhouettes on stage.
But even if a light beam falls on the musicians, we can only tell who is who by their instruments as Simon Milner (Singer, Keyboard, Bass) Gary Barber  (Guitar and Singer) and Dom Apa (Drummer) are wearing bandanas in front of their faces, so that you have to ask yourself, how can these guys  see anything at all!?
They can play nevertheless and what they deliver sounds rather superb and especially original.
The sound, they produce with drum, bass, guitar, keyboard, a 1000 effects and looped beats produce can best be described as energetic Indie- Electro with melodic guitar riffs and interesting background noises which weave into the beat and makes their sound so special.
You can compare them mostly with the Klaxons or Holy Fuck, though their singing and their lyrics aren’t as spherical and outta-space as the Klaxons.
Compared to the recorded songs, off the debut album “Native to” (French label Kitsuné), only released this autumn, their live versions sound somewhat harder, darker, but at the same time they invite you to move, which we embrace happily. Especially the youngsters in the crowed, who occupied the first couple of rows, they won’t be held back when the band is playing their more famous songs like When O When, The Greeks and Lies and turn the energy which Is Tropical emanates into electroshock shakes and bounces enthusiastically along till the back rows join in with professional foot tapping and head nodding.
On top of that, Is Tropical are really communicative and compliment us after nearly every song, telling little stories about their tour so far and at the end they invite everyone to join them for some pints before their world tour takes them away to Brazil.
I followed the invitation and had a really amusing evening with the three lads who were once known as Ratty Rat Rat.

CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION

Well, it's been over a week again, but tis been a very busy week, for partying at lest... Anyway wouldn't want to leave a week without at least one interesting entry.
So here 2 important points in history:
T-REX (Marc Bolan) whith Children of the Revolution in 1972

and than exactly 33 years later at Live 8 in Hyde Park covered by Elton John and Pete Doherty:

It seems now as relevant and true as 33 years ago, so besides all the luxuries, commerce and partying, dont forget that we all are children of the revolution and we can change everything if we just want to! So with this thought have an awesome week - go change something and make it better!

RAGE AGAINST THE BANKS!

So last night, I flicked through some newspaper pages, wanting to know whats going on in the business world and when this shit depression and job meagerness will eventually stop, when I stubled across the story of the "Nightwatchman".
The Nightwatchman was due to join the people of "Occupy London", a group of anti capitalists who protest in front of St Pauls Cathedral, London, on the 1st of November, to give them new strength and show that their country is not alone in this stand off with the banks.

Occupy London at St Pauls Cathedral

The protesters went mental when it became clear that the Nightwatchman was actually Tom Morello, no other than the guitarist from Rage Agauinst The Machine, who appeared around 8 o clock and played a solo gig to the corageous crowd. New energy was transferred to the protesters and everyone looked rather touched.
Morello already did a similar gig in New York and LA to the outraged people over there. He not only gives new hope and strenght to the protesters, but also connects them and transfers messages and exchanges experiences between the different groups.

Here's a video of the gig he did in Los Angeles on the 9th of October:

And here is the whole story:

So you anti capitalists out there, maybe some of you occupying some place or building at this moment, who would you like to come along and sing some revolutanary songs to you?
Bob Dillan? King Charles? Reverend and the Makers?

AND WEEZER DISAPPOINTS AGAIN......

Weezers New Album - Hurley

So last night, I was actually out and about, shamefully enough at a freshers uni party, getting kinda wasted, when a really dreadful song came on. As the singers voice rang a bell, I went up to the DJ's to find out which horrible band they were playing and to my great frustration it was Weezer. I can't belive that they knocked out another shitty album. When returning home that night I actually managed to get on the net and listen to the full album (god knows how drunk I must've been to endure this), but whilst looking for a good streaming site, I stumbled across this piece of news, about a very enraged non-Weezer fan, who would like to raise 10 Million dollar to pay the band to split up, in order to ease the suffering of his loved ones, who are disappointed by Weezer each year.
Here's the whole story:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/oct/07/weezer-offered-10m-split-up

So who's in it with me to drop that guy some of our hard earned money for the sake of better music and who doesnt' want to give up their belive in this band and trusts that they can still wheeze out some ingenious tunes?

CAUSE i - TUNES IS A DIGITAL VAMPIRE

So last night, I actually stayed in to cure my hell of a Halloween-hangover and flicked through the vast digital catalogue of music news when I came across this beauty of a debatable Speech, held by a rock Dinosaur (Pete Townshend) about his new ideas for the modern music industry (Aplles i-tunes).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00ljms2

So what do you think, is this what Aplle really intended when they created i-tunes, do they want to take on all these tasks? And even if, do you think Pete's ideas could work and it would make a difference for the artists?

Here the full John Peel Lecture where his memory is honoured, but mainly discusses where the music industry is evolved since than and where it is headin.... well, yeah i know, its been basically discussed every week, but still interesting.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b016k4d0

and for people from the UK, you can actually watch the people sitting there, sipping red wine and talking and of course Pete Townshend
